Visit the superb old center of the town and its beautiful cathedral (XIII century), and wander around the streets full of shops.. Saint Galgano is one of the most impressive places you can visit in this part of Tuscany: there’s an Hermitage, where a small romantic church was built, and the abbey, with a large cathedral. The roof of the cathedral fell down long ago and the impressive remaining gothic walls and arches make it a site of magic atmosphere.
Visit the Baratti gulf and its beautiful beaches, then visit the ancient Etruscan tombs. Drive to the top of the hill and visit the beautiful Populonia village and its fortress. The view is spectacular here. From here, follow the signs for Castagneto Carducci, and enjoy its intense life and shopping streets. On your way back, visit the long avenue close to Bolgheri, lined by old cypresses.
Volterra (85 km, motor highway until Cecina) San Gimignano (30 km from Volterra)This itinerary is particularly impressive for both its natural and artistic highlights. Volterra stands isolated on the top of the hill and enjoys a beautiful view over the surrounding hills. It is a millenary town, being Etruscan first, and then Roman. Today, it has kept intact its medieval structure, and is rich of palaces, monuments and museums. From Volterrra, head in direction of Saint Gimignano, in the Elsa Valley, surrounded by a magnificent countryside of olive groves and vineyards. The most famous thing about Saint Gimignano are its high and impressive towers. The town has beautiful handicraft shops, that sell especially ceramic and alabaster.

Egerton R. Williams, Jr
Siena (110 km if you pass from Massa Marittima) Dedicate a whole day to visit this famous city and to wander around the Crete landscape that surround it. Piazza del Campo is the hub of the city, and has a particular shell shape. Many art history consider it the most beautiful square in the world.

The town really deserves a visit. If you come on the first Sunday of each month, you will enjoy an interesting antiques exhibition, in the beautiful setting of the Piazza Grande, with its medieval palaces and the Vasari’s Loggia.
