Exploring the tuscan wildlife
Montecalvi. Climb the short track to the top of Montecalvi, the mountain you see at the back of the farm. This is the highest mountain in the Livorno area. The walk to the top takes less than an hour, and the track starts a few hundred meters uphill from Boschi di Montecalvi. From the top of the mountain, if the weather is clear, you can admire a breathtaking view: on one side the coast from Livorno (north) to Orbetello (south), on the other side an endless row of valleys and hills.
Mounts of Uccellina.Visit the Natural Park of the Uccellina Mountains (90 km from the farm). The mountains hide the treasure of an unspoiled nature: you can see the sandy dunes of thecoast, where the wild sea lilies grow. At back of the coast, there’s a thick pine forest, planted in 1700, where the Ombrone river runs. The park is home to a variety of wild animals: herons, roes, wild boars, and the famous maremman white cows, with their long horns. They live in a wild state, together with the horses, and are closely watched by “butteri”, the maremman cow-boys. Visit is permitted only on beaten tracks or with a guide.
Saturnia thermal baths (125 km away, mostly highway 9
This famous spring is about one hour away from the farm; this thermal spring is really a worth a visit, because of the sulphureous water river that descends a hill, creating little falls where it’s a pleasure to bathe.
